About the Artists

Jan Blencowe

Landscape painter, Jan Blencowe, BFA Caldwell College, elected member Salmagundi Club, and Connecticut Women Artists, member Guild of Boston Artists, The National oil and Acrylic Painters Society, and Connecticut Plein Air Painters, exhibits her work in New York, Boston and Connecticut.
Blencowe continues the path forged by the great American landscape painters who so seamlessly merged the grand but temporal beauties of nature and the spirituality present in every living thing.
"The elusive mystery of light is my favorite subject. Sunlight, ordinary and yet extraordinary, shapes my paintings. The evocative half-light of sunset, twilight, and dawn transport the viewer to realms beyond the visible. Whether painted on location or in the studio these landscapes go beyond mere representation and impression and delve into the deeper streams and spiritual pulse that sustains all things."

Joan Cole
My art represents my personal connection with the beauty of the world around me. My paintings are my attempts to celebrate that beauty.

When I am painting outdoors, I become absorbed in my surroundings. My favorite book as a child was Gene Stratton Porter’s Girl of the Limberlost; set at the turn of the last century, it is the story of a young women who lived in the middle of a Midwest forest and swamp, collecting butterflies and moths. When I paint, I become that girl. I drink in the juicy green of mosses beneath my feet and revel in any flower that might be blooming nearby. I am in awe of the ocean when I’m painting on its shore and feel its pounding in my chest. Bluebird or hawk; spring or fall; mountain or valley; river or marsh; bluet or hydrangea; dandelion or rose; snow or rain, willow or maple; oak or pine; light and shadow: I see this magnificence around me and want to hold it up for the rest of the world to see. Always in my art I strive to share my reverence for nature.

When I’m not painting outdoors, you can find me in my studio or off taking a class to develop my skills. I am so indebted to all the teachers I’ve been fortunate enough to study with through the years. I never can learn “enough” to capture exactly what I see and feel, but that reaching is part of the joy of painting for me.

My studies and paintings of the landscape are my endeavors to know, experience and become more intimate with the sky, land and water around me. It is a time to leave the studio and spend time with nature out of doors and to explore the feelings I have about what I see, with the skills that I have learned. When I paint plein air it is like opening another door to a world that excites, inspires and teaches me to really "know" what I see and feel. When I am out of doors I forget my controlled studio surroundings and my studio becomes expansive and open to whatever is around me and what happens. It is challenging and exciting and I am often surprised and fulfilled with the results.

My landscape work is yet another avenue for me to express myself, use my skills and to reach further into areas unknown.

There are Photographers and there are Artists.

As a Photographer, I like photographing events, people, and situations that interest me..... it's fun and I get to meet many interesting people.

As an Artist, I am fully engaged in perfecting my craft... "seeing more interestingly"...... Communicating FEELINGS visually.

Both worlds make me complete.

I hope you enjoy my work.
